William legoullon | | "Wasteland" Giclee Print 16x24 2008 | I am interested in the relationships between man and nature, time and evolution, and our awareness of the environments around us. I focus on representation of specific locations and their relationship to the world. I create work that investigates theories and realities of time and change, history and the interconnectedness of humans within our surrounding environments. Through photographic observation, discovery, and analysis, I create work that investigates and exposes ephemeral places and the individuality of ruins.
I am attracted to the hidden, the forgotten, and the places changed by time. Unexposed places with stories of their own and indications of interaction between man and nature. Environments where human influence is both apparent as well as hidden. Behind every corner and through each doorway is another opening to the past and future. Places with stories of their own that continue to change and evolve. As an artist I feel a desire to capture the truthful evidence related to these environments while investigating their history and evolution of stories within. These are places where people tend not to go but which hold their own unique insights into our individual realities. I approach photography often thinking of my camera as a tool to create photographs that become supporting pieces of a whole rather than as instant pieces of art. It is the experience of my photographs, the stories told, the knowledge gained, and the collective whole that comprises the art within.
