Artists on Artists at SMoCA

SMoCA's 5th ARTISTS ON ARTISTS SERIES
"Collectivity: Artists in Collaboration"

TONIGHT: Thursday, March 25, 7:00 PM
Featuring host artists Greg Esser and Brian Boner

Scottsdale Center For The Performing Arts Building
738O East 2nd Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

FREE AND INTERESTING: Artists present constructive ideas for creating successful local artist collectives & collaborations.

Artists on Artists is a free, experimental program showcasing artists and their work curated and organized by members of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s Artist Advisory Council. Past events have ranged thematically from specific artistic practices such as documentary photography to performance artists revealing their methods through a wacky game show format.

For those curious about starting their own artist collective or what it takes to effectively collaborate with other artists, the fifth event of this on-going series titled“Collectivity: Artists in Collaboration”will examine the various ways in which artists work together. Presented by artists Greg Esser and Brian Boner, the evening will take a look at local examples of artist collectives such as the artist-run contemporary art space eye lounge and Postcommodity, an interdisciplinary Native American art collective.

The presentation will also serve as a rich source of information for artists looking to collaborate or interested in learning how to work outside of their individual art practices within a collective environment.

I am very interested in architecture: finding one element from a building and repeating it until it tells me, “stop I have had enough”. Essentially, I strip architecture to its barest structure – to its “skeleton”. My process initiates by starting with one form; and through repetition, emphasizing the simple beauty of this initial shape. I enjoy using building materials because they are perhaps something that is taken for granted due to its abundance – much like most other naturally occurring resources. Because my work also strives to express how architecture and environment can work together, ultimately, I view my art as a bridge between nature and modern society – serving as a reminder that these two “environments” can coexist harmoniously.

Attendance at monthly meetings, held every last Sunday of the month, is mandatory.

Current eye lounge members are interested in cultivating an exciting art space with varied viewpoints, mediums, backgrounds and audiences. The desire to participate in a collective environment is an integral part of being an eye lounge member. Collaborative projects, fundraisers and numerous committees have formed in the spirit of cooperation and mutual assistance. eye lounge does not depend on grant support or commercial sales; therefore member artists control the artistic environment and presentation of their work in the space. Members have one solo show per year, participate in the annual Art Detour group show and have numerous other opportunities.

The eye lounge is celebrating it’s 10th year as a collective, artist-run, contemporary art space committed to fostering emerging and established visual artists in downtown Phoenix. To celebrate, the cooperative will bring together present and former members to show and sell their work at affordable prices.

At this once a year sale, there will be a variety of art pieces including paintings, ceramics, photography, and other art works at prices starting at only $40, with all prices under $200. Most of the work normally sells for prices at a substantially higher price, so it is an amazing opportunity for that perfect gift, or a one-of-a-kind original art piece for your home. It is also one of the best bargains in town for unique holiday shopping.

There will be an opening show at the eye lounge on Friday, November 20th starting with a viewing preview starting at 5pm, with sales opening at 7pm through 10pm. The sale will continue until December 12th. All sales will be final, so November 20th may be the best opportunity to get your first choice, as items will go fast.

All donated works from past and present Eye Lounge artists will be exhibited anonymously and offered for sale at various price points. This sale is one of the eye lounge’s major sources of income to support the space, and keeps the cooperative a vital artist community for the city of Phoenix. Gallery materials Eye Lounge will list the names and biographical information of the artists participating but the creator of each artwork will not be revealed until after purchase.

In addition, the eye lounge will also raffle more artwork for the price of $1 per entry, or 12 entries for $10. The winners will be announced at the end of the exhibit. These pieces will be announced December 12th, and will be valued at over $200. Raffle ticket sales begin on November 20th at 5pm. In addition, donations will be accepted to support the eye lounge.
