Xianna Montoya

Artist Statement

Rooted in introspection and personal narrative, my practice explores the complexities of the Mexican American experience, generational trauma, abuse, and the intricacies of human connection. My work is guided by a deep commitment to emotional truth and storytelling, using art as a medium for healing and self-reclamation. Through vulnerable, autobiographical imagery, I invite viewers into a reflective space that encourages them to confront and process their own lived experiences. My creative process is intuitive and heart-led, allowing me to forge sincere connections between artwork and audience. My paintings serve as visual testimonies of resilience, transformation, and the enduring power of honest expression.

Bio

Xianna Montoya is a second-generation Mexican American artist based in Arizona whose practice explores identity, immigration, generational memory, and personal transformation. Working primarily in painting and drawing, Montoya draws from personal experiences, family histories, and stories passed down through generations to examine the ways cultural heritage and inherited experiences shape individual identity.

Montoya received a BFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Fashion from Arizona State University in 2025, following an Associate in Occupational Studies in Baking and Pastry from The Culinary Institute of America. Her multidisciplinary background informs an artistic practice rooted in both visual storytelling and material exploration.

Her work has been exhibited in juried exhibitions at venues including Xico, Shemer Art Center, Harry Wood Gallery, EyeLounge, and the New York Academy of Art. She has also participated in the Ballet Arizona Interdisciplinary Art Fellowship and the Namingha Institute Residency. Montoya is a member of the EyeLounge Collective and continues to develop her practice in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
