Invasive Species
A Duo Exhibition presented by KJ Herb and Emma Florance
“Invasive Species” is a joint exploration of the uneasy feeling we get in the pit of our stomachs when we’re being watched. Instinctually, we know when an intrusion occurs against us: we look over our shoulders, speed up our walking pace, and knock three times on wood to break the jinx. “Invasive Species” is presented by Eye Lounge in the Modified Arts gallery space and will include work from KJ Herb and Emma Florance. This exhibition will be on display from January 16th through February 15th with an opening reception on January 16th from 6-9 pm. Eye Lounge is free and open to the public.
Herb approaches this theme from the perspective of her OCD intrusive thoughts, who she’s dubbed “The Second Narrator”. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder shows up every day in every corner of Herb’s life. In order to fight against them, she has begun to recreate the stories the narrator whispers in her ear. All she asks is that the viewer trusts her and not the Second Narrator.
Florance’s work is about the connection between people and nature in urban landscapes like Phoenix. The human infrastructure that materializes in the desert is an enchanting and terrifying invasion. Vague self-portraits look from afar, examine up close, or merge into the environment; expressing the feeling of being both an inhabitant and intruder.
